Everywhere we look, we see people who have been impacted by the lockdowns. Restaurants, business owners, healthcare professionals and many, many others (ourselves included). And thankfully, in Canada and the USA there is a lot of help available.
However, in March as this was hitting the globe, I began to research how this was going to impact those in low income areas of the world. Those already on the edge of whether they can feed themselves and their families or starve.
These are some of the key points I found…
“The pandemic is affecting all four pillars of food security in the developing world.
- Availability (is the supply of food adequate?)
- Access (can people obtain the food they need?)
- Utilization (do people have enough intake of nutrients?)
- Stability (can people access food at all times?).”
“COVID-19 threatens access to food mainly through losses of income and assets that prejudice ability to buy food. The poorest households spend around 70% of their incomes on food and have limited access to financial markets, making their food security particularly vulnerable to income shocks”
“Oxfam warns… The hunger crisis linked to coronavirus could kill more people than the disease itself…”
“In 2019, 821 million people were food insecure and 149 million of them suffered "crisis-level hunger or worse." Current projections say the number of people experiencing crisis-level hunger might reach 270 million in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, an increase of over 80% from the previous year.”
We are grateful to be partnering with Growing Hope Globally to assist in their mission to feed the hungry in parts of the world less fortunate than us. We are donating 5% of our mask sales to them. And for the next month there is a matching grant that will double our donation.
We would encourage you to take a look at what they are doing and if you are so inspired, click on the logo to do something additional on your own.
Thank you for your patronage and for your assistance in this mission as well!
